Designing the Artwork

Early on in the project Julia suggested exploring the idea of making a modern banner to express and celebrate Activism in Midlothian. This idea enabled her to discuss with each group, statements and slogans which summed up what  Activism means for each of them – e.g. working together, taking action, community matters, mutual support,  So many words and statements were forthcoming that  they were printed onto fabric  and have  been made into an additional artwork an ‘activist table cloth’ .

Stepping Forward, Midlothian Sure Start

Visits to the Mining Museum and a borrowed replica banner enabled groups to discuss the images which are found on the banners and what may work on the activism banner.

A line drawing of a photograph of volunteers at Woodburn Day Centre has become the central image of the banner.
